Art and Exhibitions at Børglum Abbey

Throughout the year, Børglum Abbey hosts a changing programme of art exhibitions. Artists from Denmark and beyond present their work in this unique historic setting, making every visit a little different.

One of the highlights was the completion of the famous Bayeux Tapestry replica in autumn 2016. Nine embroiderers spent 14 years creating a faithful reproduction of the historic tapestry, which is around 70 metres long. Today, this impressive work can be seen on display in the Hestestalden (Horse Stable).

Previous Exhibitions

Over the years, Børglum Abbey has welcomed a number of renowned artists, including:

  • Peter Brandes, who presented his internationally acclaimed ceramics and artworks at the abbey in 2017.
  • Mikael Melbye, whose exhibition Sjælebilleder (“Soul Portraits”) featured powerful and distinctive portraits. The exhibition included both previously unseen works and well-known portraits of members of the Danish royal family.
  • Esben Hanefeldt Kristensen, known for his expressive biblical imagery, has exhibited his paintings at the abbey on several occasions.
